Ontario Statutory Holidays

Ontario Statotory Holidays :

Ontario statutory holidays consists of five nationwide and four provincial statutory holidays.

1. New Year’s Day – January 1
2. Family Day – Third Monday in February
3. Good Friday – Friday before Easter Day
4. Victoria Day – Monday before May 25
5. Canada Day – July 1
6. Labour Day – First Monday in September
7. Thanksgiving Day – Second Monday in October
8. Christmas Day – December 25
9. Boxing Day – December 26

Optional Holidays :

• Civic Holiday – first Monday in August; not a statutory holiday
• Remembrance Day – November 11; not a statutory holiday

Special Rules for Ontario Statutory Holidays :

• Most employees who qualify are entitled to take these days off work and be paid public holiday pay
• Alternatively, the employee can agree electronically or in writing to work on the holiday and be paid :
  • public holiday pay plus premium pay for all hours worked on the public holiday and not receive another day off (called a “substitute” holiday);
    or
  • be paid their regular wages for all hours worked on the public holiday and receive another substitute holiday for which they must be paid public holiday pay.
• If a statutory holiday falls on employee’s day off, the first working day immediately following the holiday becomes employee’s statutory holiday.
• A substitute holiday is another working day off work that is designated to replace a public holiday. Employees are entitled to be paid public holiday pay for a substitute holiday.
